Panel 1: Can textbooks/workbooks improve the quality of teaching and learning?

Phillip  

Phillip Dikgomo (Chair) currently is a Director in the National Institute of Curriculum and Professional Development (NICPD) in the Department of Basic Education, focusing on teacher development implementation, particularly in MST. He was a Director of MST & ICT in the KZN Department of Education, where he implemented intervention programmes for teachers and subject advisors. He has an M.Sc. in Mathematics Education from WITS, where he also lectured mathematics.

  Rufus

Rufus Wesi obtained his PhD (Physics Education) at the North West University (Potchefstroom) where he also served as Physics and Science Education lecturer. Rufus also served as Deputy Director in the Department of Science & Technology. He was later appointed by Sasol as Science Centre Manager. Rufus currently holds the position of Programme Manager in the Sasol Inzalo Foundation.

Manare

Manare Setati currently works with the Ukuqonda Institute. He has been involved in teacher development for 18 years in various capacities, including teaching, teacher support and training, materials development and curriculum development in both primary and secondary school mathematics. He also taught mathematics for 7 years in both primary and secondary schools prior to getting involved in teacher development.

  Vimolan

David Sekao holds a PhD in Mathematics Education from the North-West University. His interest is in diagnostic assessment in mathematics. He started his teaching career 25 years ago as a Mathematics teacher. He worked in the Gauteng Department of Education as a subject advisor, and later as a provincial mathematics coordinator, where his responsibilities included the development of mathematics curricula and supporting subject advisors on the effective implementation of mathematics curriculum. He is currently a national mathematics coordinator in the Department of Basic Education, with the primary responsibility to develop, support and monitor the implementation of mathematics curriculum policy in the General Education and Training band.

 

Panel 2: Can e-learning improve the quality of teaching and learning

Lynn Bowie

Lynn Bowie (Chair) has a PhD in Mathematics Education and has taught university, high school and primary school mathematics learners and has worked with both pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers. She currently works for OLICO, a community-based organisation investigating and developing online, open-source material to support mathematics learning, with a particular focus on the Grade 7 - 9 level

  Eric

Eric Gulbis is currently the Lead Content Coordinator: Mathematics for Siyavula Education's adaptive, machine-learning-based practise service, Intelligent Practice. He previously worked as a mathematics teacher for over a decade at various high school levels, pursuing both effective learning for all students as well as using mathematics as a context for the development of critical thinking skills.

Giel

Micheal Goodman is the Group Content Development Manager at Via Afrika. He has been working in education for over 25 years in teaching, authoring, lecturing and publishing roles. Micheal is passionate about the role technology can play in achieving good education, and believes that when applied effectively, technology can transform educational practice.
