Theme: Envisioning Equitable Mathematics Education: Promoting relevance and engagementg
Mathematics serves as a gateway to majority careers, especially in Natural Sciences, Engineering, Technology and Accountancy.
Access and acquittance in these fields rely on competence in both basic and advanced mathematical skills and knowledge. However, currently focus is on quantitative Grades and marks which disregard learners' qualitative skills, knowledge, interests, needs and attitudes. The necessity for teaching, learning and assessment in mathematics education that is relevant to the needs of learners is continuously disregarded irrespective of past and recent reforms. Hence the obvious need for collaboration and engagement of all stakeholders in decisions of mathematics education. Equitable mathematics education emanates from various inequities and invokes various notions, such as access, achievement, identity, power, marginalisation, redistribution, patriarchy, decolonialisation and social justice.
